This study explored correlates of the suicide rate of male Canadian federal prisoners from 1960 to 1985. The prison suicide rate was associated with the Canadian male suicide rate. Birth rates were negatively associated with both prison & male Canadian suicide rates while divorce rates were significantly associated with male Canadian suicide rates. Canadian prison suicide rates appear to respond to the same social pressures as suicide rates in the general population, although less strongly.
