This article is suitable for a general audience. The article examines the authorÕs personal survey of state prisons in the United States. The author also examines inmate responses on the conditions of the prisons. The author suggests a link between childhood traumas of inmates & the traumas they experience in prison. The article also examines how stress can occur with the constant threat of violence that exists in prisons, & how this stress can lead to suicidal behaviours. The article concludes with recommendations for mental health services, as well as correctional policy in general. (AK)
