This article presents data from a study of 59 deaths in Dutch police stations from 1983-1993. 20 of these were suicides. The mortality rate, suicide rate & poisoning rate was higher in police stations than in penitentiaries & in the general population. The mortality rate was lower in larger police stations than in smaller stations. Identification of deviant detainees seemed less problematic than handling these individuals. Structural preventive measures are also discussed. (33 refs.)
