The authors attempt to disentangle the interrelations between hopelessness, loneliness, & suicidal ideation, by comparing 2 models. Model 1 framed loneliness as a risk factor for suicide that operates via its influence on hopelessness. Model 2 viewed hopelessness as a source variable that is predictive of both loneliness & suicidality & that there is no relation between loneliness & suicidality beyond hopelessness. Model 2 received support & model 1 did not. Findings are discussed.
