Alcohol & other drug use declined during the 3-year period studied, but the proportion of students who reported at least 3 adverse consequences of their use was identical in 1989 & 1992. A slight increase in low self-esteem, emotional distress, & family alienation, & a small decrease was seen in familial alcohol & other drug problems. Suicide attempts were down slightly among 6 & 9th graders, but up slightly among 12th graders.
