This study is based on interviews with psychiatric patients from the 3 psychiatric departments of Frederiksborg County in Denmark. The study took place from September 1992 – January 1993. The patients were 33 women and 17 men between 20-49 years of age. Fourteen patients (28%), stated they had been admitted to hospital due to the risk of suicide. Three women and 3 men had tried to take their own life prior to admission; 3 women and 3 men had only experienced an urge to do so.
