This editorial discusses a study by Philip McLoone, on the inequalities in suicide rates in Scotland. A cohort of 8304 people discharged from Scottish general hospitals in 1981 after parasuicide, were followed up for 13 years by record linkage. In each age group a higher proportion of males than females went on to complete suicide. In those aged 24-34, 1.4% of the women, and 4.4% of the men died by suicide during the 13 years.
