This report uses data from the National (USA) Center for Health Statistics, to compare the health status of 10-19 year olds from 1979-1994. The authors found suicides in 1979 were 12.4 per 100,000; in 1991 suicides were 13.1 per 100,000. Suicide is the third leading casue of death for young people. While suicide decreased significantly among youth aged 20-24 (8.5%) during the decade of the 80s it increased markedly among youth aged 10-14 (75%) and youth aged 15-19 (34.5%)
