Meeting the Challenge of Railway Injury in a South African City

This article analyzed railway injury & death reported by the Cape Town, South Africa rail utility, state mortuaries, & a regional trauma survey. A total of 884 incidents of fatal (379) & non-fatal (505) railway injury were identified in the 2.5 year study period. The results were 28 non-fatal suicides & 69 fatal suicides from April 1, 1992 to September 30, 1994. In 27% of all suicidal acts alcohol intoxication was apparent.
