There is a significant difference between adolescents and adults with bipolar disorder. A study was done in Cincinnati in which adolescents and adults with mania were compared in terms of symptoms, age of onset, abuse of substances, etc. They found that adolescents tended to be more depressed and likely to abuse drugs while adults were more psychotic and likely to abuse alcohol. Many factors contribute to these differences such as family history, central nervous system development, etc.
