This clinical case discusses Gloria, a 32-year-old divorced, Spanish-speaking woman. The paper: (a) reviews the presenting symptoms & course of illness, & (b)examines the social setting & life events of three time periods that might have contributed to this woman’s suffering. The authors hope to suggest that in the setting of severe environmental stress, what appears to be an illness might well be understood as signs of adaptation.
