This article addresses medical student suicide from August 1989 – May 1994. Responses were obtained from 80% of the 126 United States medical schools. If a suicide had occurred, information regarding demographic characteristics, psychiatric or substance abuse history, means of suicide, month, and presence of a suicide note was obtained. The schools reported 15 suicides by medical students, 14 were by men, 6 suicides were committed during the 3rd year, and 4 occurred during the fourth year.
