The relatives of 58 adolescent suicide probands & 55 similar controls were assessed for Axis I & II psychiatric disorders, lifetime history of aggression & suicidal behavior using family study & family history methods. It was found that liability to suicidal behavior might be familially transmitted as a trait independent of psychiatric disorders. The transmitted spectrum of behavior includes attempts & completions but not ideation. The transmission of suicidal behaviors & aggression are related.
