This article examines factors associated with completed suicide in young parasuicide patients. The subjects of this study were patients who, between 1968 & 1985 when aged 15-24 years, were admitted to the regional poisoning treatment center because of deliberate self-harm. The study concludes that suicide after parasuicide in young people is mostly associated with substance misuse. The article suggests that close liaisons between general hospital services for patients who have attempted suicide, & services for young substance misusers could help reduce the incidents of suicide after parasuicide.
