This presentation notes that hotlines can expect up to 30% of their callers to have a severe & persistent mental illness & that volunteer & peer counselors need to be sensitive to & knowledgeable about this population. It discusses who the mentally ill callers are, why they call, & effective telephone interventions. It concludes that the chronically ill will continue to use hotlines to provide themselves with basic mental care.
