This paper describes the historical background & current situation regarding the practice of assisted suicide in The Netherlands. It discusses the “golden standard” of conduct for doctors & other health professionals in this area. Although perfect application of this standard encourages careful, responsible professional conduct & provides satisfactory safeguards, there are many cases where the desired perfection is far from feasible, hence assistance with suicide remains very hazardous.
