In his message as new AAS president, the author reviews suicide prevention efforts at the primary, secondary & tertiary levels. He concludes that few clear or intentional initiatives have been entered into by AAS in the primary prevention area. This involves the elimination of the forces & factors that might ultimately produce a problem (such as suicide) & the promotion of well-being so as to protect against dysfunction. He hopes to focus AAS efforts in this direction.
