In 1993, the five American states with the lowest rates of suicide were: Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, Washington DC, & New Jersey. Some prominent suicidologists were asked why these states have such low rates. It is speculated by the experts that protective factors such as gun control laws in New Jersey & readily available mental health services in all of these states help to keep their suicide rates down.
