Results of research which compared mortality data for Buffalo police officers to that of municipal employees are reported. Police officers were found to have a 1.53 relative risk of suicide over homicide, 3.1 for suicide over accidents, & 2.65 for suicide over homicide & accidents combined when compared to the municipal workers. Contributing factors to the high rate of police suicide are outlined. It is suggested that confidential psychological services for police need to be more accessible.
