Wien discusses the conditions of Indian communities that result in both poverty & suicide, and uses the MicMac of Nova Scotia to demonstrate his argument. The arrival of European settlers & Canadian government decisions destroyed their culture & economic livelihood. Wien suggests these external events sparked a causal dynamic that can end in suicide. More emphasis should be placed on community-level variables of suicide. Suggestions to restore community health are given. (19 refs.)
