This summary reviews the study of Isometsa et al (1994) on suicide in major depression (see SIEC #940721). 71 Finnish suicides who met criteria for unipolar major depression were studied through psychological autopsies. Most female victims had a history of psychiatric treatment, current treatment contact & had communicated their suicidal thoughts to family members & health care professionals. Male victims also had a history of psychiatric treatment but few were in treatment at the time of death.
