Ethical aspects of psychological autopsies were examined. Ethical problems for 3 groups of agents – informants & other relatives, the researcher, & research – are discussed according to the principles of nonmaleficence, beneficence & respect for autonomy. Data & experiences from studies of suicide among 271 men, 104 women & 58 youth are presented; the last 2 groups were also contacted by telephone to assess their reaction to the main interview. Many subjects seem to benefit from the interview.
