The belief that suicide is more common from September to December (a period known as the “buildup”) in Australia’s Northern Territory was examined. Only the 171 non-Aboriginal male suicides between 1979-91 were included in the study. Results showed that nearly half of the 75 suicides in men aged 35-59 occurred during the buildup contrasted to 21% of suicides among 15-34-year-old men. The buildup may be a “suicide season” for men aged 35 & over, but it coincides with a decline among younger men.
