Mental disorders among 60 Finnish suicide victims who had cancer were investigated using psychological autopsy data. Retrospective DSM-III-R diagnoses were assigned to all subjects & to 60 matched comparison suicides without cancer. Depressive sydromes were equally common in both groups. Alcohol dependence & personality disorders were more frequent among noncancer suicides. Major depression & substance abuse were more common among victims with cancer in remission than in terminal stages.
