One approach that can be used for the prevention of suicide among the aged is the strengths perspective. This article describes this technique which improves the coping skills of seniors by forming a coalition with the therapist & client to overcome the perceived unbearable pain that can lead to suicide. This approach builds on the older person’s preexisting survival skills. The strengths perspective challenges the current system that focuses on the dysfunctions & pathology of clients.
