The cultural & historical factors affecting suicide in Yugoslavia are discussed in the opening of this column. Differences in the rates of suicide in the various regions of Yugoslavia are summarized. The history of suicide intervention in Yugoslavia before 1991 is covered. The origin & operation of a Serbian volunteer organization called “Srce” (Heart) is reviewed. This organization is now a member of Befrienders International.
