1994/1995 Retrospective Study of Inmate Suicides in the Correctional Service of Canada

The author reports on 14 suicides that occurred in the Correctional Service of Canada from April, 1994-March, 1995. Data is compared to that from inmate suicides from April,1991-March, 1994. There were few similarities between the 2 groups. Analysis of individual suicides stresses that suicide is highly idiosyncratic in nature, & thus difficult to predict. There is a continuing need to develop/follow guidelines, orders & procedures relating to suicide & to improve suicide training & prevention.
