American research on the effect of divorce on suicide is compared to Japanese data. Japan has a low divorce rate, high extended family integration, cultural conformism & low couple centeredness. Suicide-related variables such as unemployment, religiosity & postwar anomie are examined as controls. A time series analysis does not substantiate the divorce-suicide pattern for Japan or support Durkheim’s predicted relationship between divorce & suicide but corroborates his family integration theory.
