Twenty-three patients from a psychiatric hospital who suicided between 1928 & 1953 were studied in an attempt to determine their state of mind & actual intent to suicide. Six subjects had made previous suicide attempts. Eleven patients suicided in the hospital; 12 suicided while out on home visits. Banen concluded that patients with a diagnosis of psychosis give no more warning of suicidal intent than do nonpsychotics. (20 refs)
