An analysis of regional & temporal covaration of suicide rates & indicators of alcohol use & abuse in Portugal is reported. In a time series analysis, a positive relationship was found. An increase in per capita alcohol consumption of 1 litre is accompanied by a simultaneous increase in the male suicide rate of 1.9%. In the regional data, there was a negative correlation between the variables, even after controlling for religious & family integration. A possible explanation is suggested.
