Allen states that the one component that remains constant in youth suicide prevention is the role of family physicians as gatekeepers. Part of this role involves screening adolescent patients for suicide potential. Areas that the physician should cover during the history taking include: family history, peer history, communication skills, relationships, & substance abuse. Physicians should also build a network with mental health professionals for the times when referrals are necessary.
