109 Irish psychiatrists completed a questionnaire on the suicide of patients in their care. A patient suicide was reported by 82%, of whom 47% experienced their first patient suicide within 5 years of entering practice. A formal review of the suicide had occurred in 24% of cases. The perceived effects of this experience on the professional practice of the respondents were examined, & measures of related stress were taken. The implications of this experience for training programs are discussed.
