Suicidal Behavior as Related to Social Support and Assertiveness Among Swedish and Turkish High School Students: a Cross-Cultural Investigation

Among 652 Swedish & 654 Turkish adolescents, it was found that 61 Swedish & 71 Turkish subjects reported previous suicide attempts. Variables associated with previous attempts in both groups included previous psychiatric contact & suicide attempts in the family. Factors associated with current suicide risk included low perceived family & peer support, previous suicide attempts & prior psychiatric contact. A relationship was not found between suicide attempts, suicide risk & assertiveness.
