The renewed interest in the concept of euthanasia is examined. Definitions of euthanasia & assisted suicide are provided & it is shown how these differ from what the public assumes is being discussed in the media. Results of opinion polls concerning euthanasia are presented. Philosophical arguments which follow utilitarian or deontological theory are examined, & the question of moral relativism is addressed. The dilemmas that legalization could present for physicians are reviewed.
