The rate of suicide has been increasing among elderly persons in the USA. Risk factors that have been defined in epidemiologic studies are outlined; the most powerful of these are psychiatric illness & a history of suicide attempts. Research has found that in the elderly death by suicide is significantly associated with a single episode of major affective illness occurring at the time of the suicide. However, many other social, biological & personal factors must also be considered.
