A survey to estimate the prevalence of sexual, assaultive & suicidal behaviours was administered to 3,738 predominantly Hispanic & African-American junior high students in New York. 10% of males & 19% of females reported suicide ideation or attempts. The primary risk factor for suicidal behaviour was depressive symptoms. Involvement in sexual & assaultive behaviours substantially increased the risk of suicidal behaviours. Findings highlight the need for prevention programs for minority youth.
