This article discusses a long-term community survey of the prevalence of mental disorders in Edmonton, Alberta. 3,956 people were interviewed, along with 2,385 first-degree relatives of the initial interviewees. 23.4% of the initial 3,956 people had experienced at least one episode of a major disorder during the preceding year – most commonly alcohol abuse & major depression. Only 28.1% of people who had been diagnosed had sought help from some kind of professional.
