The expectation that teachers will be supportive, emotionally detached adults can create tension with the teacher’s own beliefs, expectations & experiences. Teachers’ grief can be hidden for many reasons, e.g. their relationship with a student may not be recognized by themselves or others. The experiences of some Australian teachers are used to show how traumatic incidents impact on them & how their view of themselves as teachers is influenced by their professional & personal grief experiences.
