The many ways in which telephone counselling has been used are reviewed. The unique qualities of therapy by telephone are presented as are the advantages & disadvantages of this type of counselling. Issues which have been raised by telephone hotlines, including counsellor selection & training, staff turnover & burnout, problem callers, & evaluation, are discussed.
