This Letter to the Editor notes that the Remmelink report sponsored by the Dutch government shows that as a result of The Netherlands policy, 1000 lives a year are ended deliberately by physicians without explicit request from the patient, & one fourth of all deaths come prematurely because the physician & not the family or patient, decided to end life prematurely. The Letter observes that the “slippery slope” has truned out to be an abyss. Implications for democracy are discussed.
