A study on the prevalence of depressive symptoms & suicidal ideation, their comorbidity, & associated risk in adolescence. A questionaire was completed by students in 3 middle grades. Suicidal ideation among adolescents is in the 10-20% range, while rates of depressive symptoms are in the 35-50% range. Mexican-American youths appear to be at higher risk. Youths who spoke only or mostly English reported lower rates of depression & suicidal ideation, suggesting that acculturation may play a role.
