The weight & morphology of postmortem adrenal glands were compared between suicide victims & sudden death, nonpsychiatric controls. The mean adrenal weight of both glands was significantly higher in the suicide group; this difference was specifically due to increases in left adrenal weight in the suicide victims. There was a positive correlation between adrenal weight & total cortical thickness in both glands, proving that increased adrenal weight in suicides is due to cortical hypertrophy.
