This Letter comments on an article by D.Watts & H.G. Morgan & the medicolegal consequences of their thesis. It suggests the concept would provide a clear & direct rationale for negligence actions against psychiatric staff caring for patients who have committed suicide, & absolve suicidal patients of responsibility for their actions. The authors take exception to these comments & note their concept promotes a systematic & objective review of the complex factors involved in managing suicidal risk.
