Abstract
National FOP Looks at Police Suicide and how to Prevent it
This article discusses findings from an ongoing study by the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), & the initiation of a suicide prevention program. Suicide was the leading cause of accidental death among police officers followed by homicides & motor vehicles accidents. More suicides occurred among officers over the age of 55. The study used 1992-94 data from 38,800 life insurance policies of FOP members in 24 states. A future study of police suicides in New York City is noted.
