This article describes the strong commitment to suicide prevention efforts at the Elayan Hunt Correctional Center (EHCC) in Louisiana. Between 1983 & 1994, EHCC had 57,091 admissions & processed 11,034 through its Adult Reception & Diagnostic Center. During this period there was only one suicide. EHCC program components described: weekly staff training; intake screening/assessment; housing; levels of supervision; intervention procedures (suicide prevention kit); & administrative review.
