Relatively little is known about the prevalence or determinants of self-destructive behaviour in patients with dementing disorders. This article reviews studies & explores the question of why suicide risk is not higher than available data suggest. Suggestions for future research are noted. As attitudes towards self-determined death change, decisions about end of life should be based on as accurate an understanding as possible of the persons attitude towards their life & death. (8 Refs.)
