Four emergency room case examples are discussed in this chapter. They illustrate various approaches to intervention, the importance of developing an alliance with the patient, assessment of ego functions, use of medication, & involvement of family members in intervention. General guidelines for evaluation & therapeutic considerations are discussed. Routine involvement of more than one clinician in every case & use of a biopsychosocial model of human functioning is recommended. (23 Refs.)
