Data on adolescent suicide is provided in this introductory chapter to underline the magnitude of the problem. The difficulties, frustrations, experiences, & challenges facing clinicians engaged in treatment of suicidal adolescents are examined. Thoughts on what constitutes successful treatment are suggested. Some individuals & families do make impressive & enduring progress. Knowing this helps mental health professionals to continue working with this difficult population. (60 Refs.)
