The relationship between self-esteem deficits & suicidal tendencies was examined in 254 adolescent psychiatric inpatients & 288 high school students. An indirect relationship between self-esteem & suicidality was also examined by assessing depression & hopelessness. Differences were found across gender & hospitalization status with males reporting higher self-esteem than females. High school students scored higher in self-esteem than did the psychiatric inpatients. (61 refs.)
