Major methods, & their theoretical underpinnings, for the definition & measurement of sexual orientations are reviewed. Their limitations & pitfalls, both practical & conceptual, are highlighted. The increasing politicization of this area is discussed & cautioned against. Recommendations, both general & geared toward measurement concerns with adolescent populations, are made. A specific measurement strategy, which can be utilized at a number of different levels, is detailed. (36 refs.)
